Computer Science Courses

Computer Science is an area of study for students who wish to acquire the skills and knowledge related to the world of computing technology. In computer science courses, students have hands-on opportunities to experience real world problems and solutions with an emphasis on the ability to work collaboratively and independently on related projects. Students have the opportunity to learn about related careers, computer technology, programming, data structures and analysis. 3873 - Introduction to Computer Science I

Length: 1 Semester

Grades: 9, 10

Prerequisite: None

Introduction to Computer Science I focuses on the conceptual ideas of computing. It is intended to help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. This one semester course focuses on the Internet and Web Design. Students will learn about the hardware and structure of the internet, the user experience and safety, and the basics of Web Site Design. This course will expose students to the careers in Web Development and in Networking.

3874 - Introduction to Computer Science II

Length: 1 Semester

Credit: .50

Grades: 9, 10

Prerequisite: Introduction to Computer Science I is recommended but not required

Introduction to Computer Science II builds on the topics from Introduction to Computer Science I and extends the students' experience with using technology to solve problems. This one semester course focuses on Basic Programming and Game Design. Students will learn the basics of coding while building video games that entertain, inform and educate.

3881/3882 - Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 (3201/3202)

In this course, students will be introduced to the foundational concepts of computer science. The course challenges students to explore how computing and technology can impact the world. With a unique focus on creative problem solving and real-world applications, AP Computer Science Principles prepares students for college and career.

After completion of this course, students can participate in the National Advanced Placement Testing Program in May. This test enables students to receive possible college credits and/or Advanced Placement.

3891/3892 - Advanced Placement Computer Science

Length: 2 Semesters

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 (3201/3202)

This class emphasizes object oriented programming methodology in the Java language with an emphasis on problem solving and algorithm development and is meant to be the equivalent of a first semester course in college-level computer science. It is intended for those pursuing future work in computer science, as well as related fields of post-secondary study. The course emphasizes programming methodology, the study of data structures and abstraction and introduces the student to the object oriented
programming paradigm using the Java language, including a College Board Case Study in Grid World. Concepts including classes, arrays, searching and sorting, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, interfaces, recursion, and code reusability will be covered.
