Community Transition Services (CTS) is a program within our district that is designed to support students with disabilities as they transition from school to adult life. This specialized program serves students ages 18–21 and focuses on developing the skills needed for greater independence, community participation, and employment readiness.
Led by Ali Swenson and Lisa Griffiths, the CTS program blends direct instruction with real-world application. While students do participate in classroom-based learning, they spend much of their day actively engaged in hands-on experiences throughout the community. These experiences include practicing transportation skills, work site learning, cooking meals, volunteering, and managing daily routines. By learning in authentic environments, students are better prepared to generalize and apply their skills in everyday life.
The curriculum is centered around core areas such as daily living skills, functional academics, and vocational training. Students work on goals like personal care, meal planning, navigating public spaces, and understanding workplace expectations. Instruction is individualized based on each student’s needs, strengths, and post-secondary transition plan.
Work-based learning is a key component of the program. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, students gain exposure to a variety of job settings and receive support as they explore potential career pathways. These experiences not only build job-specific skills, but also foster problem-solving, time management, and interpersonal communication.
The program also emphasizes self-advocacy and decision-making. Students are encouraged to participate in planning their own goals and to take increasing ownership of their schedules, routines, and future plans. Swenson notes, “We want our students to see themselves as young adults who contribute to their communities.” Lisa Griffiths adds, “Seeing our students grow in confidence and independence is incredibly rewarding. These moments are meaningful steps towards success.”
Community Transition Services reflects the district’s commitment to outcome-driven special education. By focusing on meaningful, real-world preparation, the program provides students with the opportunity to leave the school system with tools and experiences that support greater independence and personal growth.
