WSMA - Composition Project Awards 2022

Each year the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sponsors a Student Composition Project.  Congratulations to the many students, evaluators, and educators who made this a success.  
 
  • 121 total submissions received from 82 students
  • 65 educators with one or more students participating
  • 99 submissions in the High School Division (grades 9-12)
  • 17 submissions in the Middle School Division (grades 7-8)
  • 5 submissions in the Intermediate School Division (grades 4-6)
From these submissions we celebrate the following awards:
 
  • 11 compositions received Honorable Mention distinction
  • 41 compositions received Merit awards across 13 categories
Students were recognized in a virtual awards ceremony on May 14th, that included an interactive learning session for all winners led by our guest speaker and Wisconsin composer, Dr. Michelle McQuade Dewhirst, followed by the awards ceremony.  
 
Frank Loyd Wright 8th Grade Orchestra student Ethan Pawlak received First Place for his arrangement Indigonium Forge. His orchestra teacher is Mary Pat Michels and he takes private viola lessons with Amanda Koch, who also helps him with his music composition passion.  This is the second time Ethan has won this award.
